Struck by Lightning at Dreamforce 2014

Over the last two years the Salesforce platform has undergone a major reengineering effort which is now emerging as Salesforce 1 Lightning.

All of the new tools and features announced at Dreamforce 2014 build on this new platform including:

  • Lightning App builder (new)
  • Lightning Process builder (new)
  • Lightning Schema builder (new)
  • Lightning Connector (new)
  • Journey builder (new)
  • Community Designer (new, replacing site.com)
  • Wave (new Analytics Cloud)
  • And much more.

All of these Products will leverage Lightning UI (Lightning components and Lightning component extensions) allowing reusable custom code, based on the Aura open source project, but making it available to administrators via configuration and WYSIWYG editors.  All of this has been done with a true mobile first focus, with the first availability in the Salesforce 1 mobile app (via the Lightning App builder) for the mobile and tablet form factors (desktop and other form factors coming later in 2015).

Community Cloud will also be able to leverage Lightning components, greatly expanding the Content Management offerings within Salesforce, with access to custom Visualforce content and the power of Apex.  Lightning UI will also allow standard Salesforce layouts to be customized via configuration, a long awaited feature by all Salesforce customers (becoming available in later 2015).

What struck me most was how this new platform empowers Administrators and Developers promising them tools to make their collaboration faster and more productive, allowing all of us to keep a laser focus on the customer and their experience.   You can find out more about Salesforce 1 Lightning here.
